ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Ekiti State Police Command has rescued worshippers abducted during an attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area, more than two months after they were kidnapped, but confirmed that one of the victims died while in captivity.
The victims were seized on April 28, 2026, when gunmen invaded the Christ Apostolic Church in the Eda-Oniyo community, sparking a major rescue operation involving multiple security agencies.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, announced the successful rescue in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.
According to the police, the operation was made possible through sustained intelligence-driven efforts and close collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, the military, other security agencies, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters and the Ekiti State Government.

The command, however, disclosed that one of the kidnapped worshippers lost his life while being held by the abductors.
The statement said the rescued victims had been taken to hospital for medical examination and treatment to assess their condition and ensure they received proper medical attention after their ordeal.
Commending all those involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, praised the professionalism, dedication and teamwork demonstrated by the various security agencies and other stakeholders that led to the successful rescue.
The police commissioner also expressed appreciation to the Ekiti State Government under Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for its continued support to security agencies, noting that the administration’s assistance played a significant role in the success of the operation.
He further thanked residents of the state for their vigilance, cooperation and timely supply of credible intelligence, which he described as vital in combating crime.
While assuring residents that efforts had been intensified to apprehend those responsible for the abduction, the commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Ekiti State.
