LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigerian athletes Kanyinsola Ajayi and Tobi Amusan finished on the podium in their respective races at the Eugene Diamond League also known as Prefontaine Classic held in Oregon, United States.
Kanyinsola Ajayi defeated reigning world champion Oblique Seville and equaled the Nigerian national record with a blistering 9.84 seconds in the men’s 100m at the Pre Fontaine Classic tournament.
The 20-year-old NCAA champion produced a composed and dominant display against a world-class field, confirming his status as one of the fastest rising stars in global sprinting.
Despite a strong late surge from Jamaica’s Seville, the Nigerian held firm to cross the finish line first in a career-best and national record-equalling 9.84 seconds.
Seville finished second in 9.89 seconds, while former world champion Christian Coleman was third in 9.95 seconds.
American Kenneth Bednarek claimed fourth in 9.96 seconds after the closely contested race.

Amusan Finish Second Behind Russell
Meanwhile, Women hurdles 100m world record holder, Tobi Amusan continued her impressive return to top form with another top performance and finished second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2026 Eugene Diamond League on Saturday.
The Nigerian world record holder clocked 12.34 seconds to secure the runner-up spot behind Olympic champion Masai Russell, who maintained her unbeaten outdoor campaign by storming to victory in 12.24 seconds.
Bahamian star Devynne Charlton completed the podium in 12.41 seconds, narrowly edging American Grace Stark, who recorded the same time but finished fourth after a photo finish.

For Amusan, the runner-up finish represents another encouraging outing after her recent Diamond League victory in Rabat.
The former world champion continues to build momentum and confidence as she prepares for the season’s biggest championships.
