LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has dismissed the long-standing perception that members of the Kuti family use narcotics, saying the belief is far from the truth.
Speaking with TheCable during the United States Mission’s 250th Independence Day celebration in Lagos, the musician said people are often surprised to learn that he does not smoke or use narcotics.
While opening up about his personal values and passion for climate awareness, the singer revealed that the stereotype has followed his family for years despite not reflecting reality.
He also revealed that his father, Femi Kuti, no longer smokes, saying the assumption that every member of the family engages in drug use is simply false.
“A lot of people think I smoke, but I don’t, and even my dad has quit. So, there is a big misconception that the family are all into narcotics, but most of us are not,” Made said.

Made also described himself as hardworking, passionate and deeply loyal. He noted that his commitment to loyalty is closely connected to his life as a married man.
When asked about the music he enjoys the most, the Afrobeat star said he still finds himself listening to his legendary grandfather, Fela Kuti, more than any other Nigerian artist.
The conversation also turned to issues beyond entertainment, with Made drawing attention to climate change.
He argued that while Nigerians frequently discuss economic and cultural challenges, environmental concerns deserve far greater attention.
“I think honestly we are very aware of the cultural issues we are facing and the economic issues we are facing, but something very important I will say is climate change,” he added.
