ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday unveiled retired civil servant Bolakale Kawu as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

The party also introduced the Presiding Pastor of Oasis of Wisdom Bible Church, Ilorin, Cornelius Fawenu, as Kawu’s running mate, in line with its Muslim-Christian ticket arrangement.

The unveiling took place at the party’s state secretariat in Ilorin and was attended by party leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters from different parts of the state.

Addressing attendees, the Kwara PDP Chairman, Isa Adamu, described the event as a significant step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 governorship election.

Adamu said Kawu selected Fawenu as his running mate after wide consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the state, following a thorough selection process involving four qualified nominees.

He explained that Fawenu was chosen because of his competence, integrity, experience and long record of contributions to community development, peacebuilding and humanitarian service.

“Fawenu’s emergence reflects the values of competence, integrity and selfless service that our party stands for,” Adamu said.

The state chairman also praised Fawenu for stepping down from the race for the Kwara South senatorial ticket in the interest of the party.

“His decision to step down demonstrates loyalty, discipline and selfless leadership, which are qualities the party cherishes,” he added.

Adamu further disclosed that the party had begun the constitutional process of informing its national leadership about the vacancy created by Fawenu’s withdrawal from the senatorial contest.

He reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to providing what he described as purposeful leadership in the state.

“Our administration will prioritise security, economic growth, quality education, youth and women empowerment, agriculture and transparent governance. We urge all party members to remain united and committed to securing victory in the 2027 general election,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Fawenu expressed gratitude to God and the party leadership for the confidence placed in him.

He also thanked the party’s leader, Bukola Saraki, Kawu, the state chairman, the State Working Committee, the Council of Elders and party members across Kwara State for their support.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kwara State, Bishop STG Adewole, represented by Rev. Yemi Adepoju, urged PDP members and residents to uphold peace, unity and responsible leadership as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.

Adepoju also appealed to political actors and their supporters to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid actions capable of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

“Political actors and their supporters should conduct their campaigns peacefully while placing the interest of Kwara State above personal and partisan considerations,” he said.
