Egypt Clinch Round Of 16 Spot Via Abdelmaguid Penalty

LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the last penalty kick in the shootout to send Egypt to the round of 16 after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Australia in regular time.

The Pharaohs of Egypt are through to the FIFA World Cup round of 16 for the first time ever after they edged Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Egypt started the match on the front foot and got their reward 13 minutes after kickoff as Emam Ashour scored with a diving header from Karim Hafez perfectly flighted cross after a set piece situation.

Australia fought hard to find an opener nut they were unable to in the first 45.

The second half on the other hand proved different as the Socceroos scored nine minutes after the break.

Mohammed Hany suffered the ignominy of conceding an own goal when Aiden O’Neill sent in a free kick.

The goal was the defender’s second own goal of the competition after conceding one against Belgium in the group stage.

Egypt came close to snatching a late win, but Rami Rabia header was tipped over by Patrick Beach who was moving away from the trajectory of the ball but still manage to get his hand up in time.

The match went to extra time as both sides were unable to find the winner.

The game remained tied at the end of extra time therefore it went down to the lottery of penalty kicks

In the shootout that ensued Australia captain Harry Souttar blasted his spot kick into the stands.

Teenager Lucas Herrington also saw his penalty hit the crossbar.

On the other hand, the Pharaohs scored their first three penalties.

Abdelmaguid scored the winning spot kick to secure his country a 4-2 victory.

The Pharaohs will now face World champions Argentina in the round of 16.
