LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Sunny Alli has explained why he refuses to write money ritual or witchcraft stories, saying he prefers realistic plots based on experiences people can relate to rather than myths.
Speaking during an episode of the Oyinmomo podcast on YouTube, the filmmaker said he avoids supernatural storylines because they cannot be verified.
According to Alli, he has never seen convincing evidence that witch meetings or similar practices exist, making such plots difficult for him to believe or portray on screen.
“There are some lines that can never be in my scripts. Like witch meetings, I feel it is not realistic because we do not know if it is true. No one has experienced it. Do they rent a hall? Some even say they wear red clothes. Who went there?” he asked.
Expanding on his position, the veteran actor said he would rather tell stories about real-life events that people encounter every day than rely on myths.
“Who is the witch that documented everything? How do witches even look? I can write about hit-and-run because it is real. Those are things people experience,” Alli said.

Alli also questioned one of Nollywood’s most recurring themes, money rituals, arguing that the stories often fail basic logic.
He said he once challenged believers in money rituals by asking where the supposed wealth actually comes from if a demon is responsible.
“I always say I do not believe in money rituals because I once asked them a question. They said a demon brings money. Does the demon have a printing machine? Will it steal money from the Central Bank of Nigeria or a Bureau de Change?” he explained.
The filmmaker added that whenever he pressed for answers, the explanations kept changing.
“I asked them, and they were confused, so they came up with another myth that the money comes through a contract that the person did not even bid for. I love realistic scripts. I do not believe in money rituals,” he added.
Alli also reflected on his personal life, revealing that he once participated in football betting but eventually quit because he no longer believed it aligned with his values.
“I used to bet before. I mean football betting, but God does not support it. We thank God it is now in the past,” he revealed.
