Lagos, Nigeria (VOCE OF NAIJA)- THE Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed sadness over the death of the Onipokia of Ipokia Kingdom, Oba Yisa ‘Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan, describing the late monarch as a dependable partner in the fight against smuggling, border security and the promotion of lawful trade.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of officers and personnel of the Command, the Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Oladapo Afeni, extended sympathies to the Iwaye Dodo Royal Family, the Ipokia Traditional Council and the people of Ipokia Kingdom over the monarch’s passing.
The revered traditional ruler died on June 27 in the United States after a brief illness.
In the statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Zakari Chado, Afeni said the monarch’s reign was marked by wisdom, humility and a strong commitment to community development, peace and collaboration between traditional institutions and security agencies operating within the border region.

“We have lost a father, a wise counsellor and a critical stakeholder in our efforts to maintain border security and economic stability in the region. His Royal Majesty was highly instrumental in fostering mutual understanding and synergy between the Nigeria Customs Service and the law-abiding people of Ipokia. His departure leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill,” Afeni said.
The tribute comes about five months after Afeni paid a courtesy visit to the monarch’s palace to strengthen Customs’ engagement with traditional institutions.
During the visit, the late monarch pledged the support of the Ipokia Kingdom to the Nigeria Customs Service in combating smuggling, facilitating legitimate trade and enhancing national security. He also urged the Area Controller to discharge his responsibilities “without fear or favour” and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s economic objectives.
Throughout his reign, Oba Olaniyan consistently advocated closer collaboration between border communities and security agencies, stressing the importance of intelligence sharing and community participation in curbing smuggling while promoting legitimate cross-border commerce.
Afeni described the late monarch as a bridge-builder whose influence extended beyond the traditional institution, noting that his leadership and fatherly guidance contributed significantly to peace, stability and stronger cooperation between Customs and border communities.
He prayed for strength and comfort for the royal family, the Ipokia Traditional Council and the people of the kingdom, expressing hope that the monarch’s legacy of peace, patriotism and selfless service would continue to inspire future generations.
