LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has set a new Spotify record for an African artiste after surpassing the continent’s highest-ever monthly listener count, driven by the global success of his FIFA World Cup anthem with Shakira.

The Grammy winner recently reached 46.84 million monthly listeners, surpassing the previous African record of 46.58 million held by South African singer Tyla.

Since then, Burna Boy’s audience has continued to grow, pushing his monthly listeners to 47.3 million and placing him on course to become the first African artiste to cross the 50 million monthly listener mark on Spotify.

The milestone comes amid the massive global success of “Dai Dai,” his FIFA World Cup anthem with Colombian superstar Shakira.

Adding to the achievement, the song climbed to the top of the Spotify Global Top Songs Chart, earning Burna Boy his first-ever No. 1 on the worldwide ranking.

With more than 4.215 million streams in a single day, “Dai Dai” became the first song by an African lead artiste to top Spotify’s global chart since Wizkid reached the summit through his feature on Drake’s 2016 hit “One Dance.”

The record-breaking performance also caught the attention of American singer-songwriter Jon Bellion, who celebrated co-writing the World Cup anthem alongside Ed Sheeran.

Reacting to the achievement, Bellion shared his excitement over seeing “Dai Dai” reach No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Songs Chart.

The latest milestone adds another chapter to Burna Boy’s growing list of international achievements, further cementing his position among Africa’s biggest music exports while highlighting the increasing global reach of Afrobeats.
