LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Harry Kane scored a brace against DR Congo at the Atlanta Stadium to help England secure a 2-1 win and a spot in the round of 16.

The match started in the African side’s favour as Brian Cipenga opened the scoring with just seven minutes on the clock.

Chancel Mbemba floated a cross to Cipenga who ran into space and pulled the trigger from a tight angle.

The seventh minute strike marked his first goal for his country.

England got a chance to pull level through Marcus Rashford’s volley in the 35th minute but his ex-Manchester United teammate, Aaron Wan Bissaka blocked the ball pn the line.

DRC star man Yoane Wissa would have given the Leopards a two-goal cushion, but his strike clipped the post before going wide.

Kane also saw his call for a penalty waved off by the referee as he was deemed to have dived.

He finally got on the scoresheet when he shook off Axel Tuanzebe to power home Anthony Gordon’s cross.

The Bundesliga winner added his second of the night with 15 minutes to go.

Gordon was the provider again as he played a simple pass to his captain who roofed the ball into the top of the net without looking at the goal post.

Wissa got a chance to draw DRC level, but his last-minute free kick missed the net by mere inches.

Thomas Tuchel’s team will now take on co-hosts Mexico in the round of 16.
