ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigeria has attracted at least $247.3m in humanitarian funding in 2026, according to the latest report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which tracks funding across eight crisis-affected countries in West and Central Africa.
The report revealed that $232.8m of the total was channelled through Nigeria’s Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan.
The increase has raised funding coverage for Nigeria’s $516.4m humanitarian requirement to 47 per cent, the second-highest coverage rate among the countries assessed.
The figures were obtained from OCHA’s latest weekly West and Central Africa Regional Funding Status report for the period ending June 22, 2026.
The report drew its data from the United Nations Financial Tracking Service.
According to the report, Nigeria’s humanitarian funding coverage rose from 33 per cent in late March to 47 per cent by late June.
The OCHA Regional Office for West and Central Africa publishes the funding status reports weekly using data from the UN Financial Tracking Service, covering all 23 countries in the region.

Funding plans are monitored for eight countries: Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Cameroon and the Central African Republic.
Data obtained showed that the United States and the European Commission’s humanitarian agency, ECHO, remained the region’s largest donors.
By June 22, the United States had contributed a cumulative $929.6m to the region, while ECHO provided $321.3m.
Germany followed with $116.9m, while the United Kingdom, Canada and Switzerland contributed $77.2m, $72.6m and $72.5m respectively.
Although the Financial Tracking Service did not provide a donor-by-donor breakdown for Nigeria, the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, a country-level pooled funding mechanism, received $17.2m and featured as a recipient in both the 2025 and 2026 reports.
An analysis of reports published between December 2025 and June 2026 showed that Nigeria’s HNRP funding rose steadily from $173.6m on March 30 to $192.8m on April 27, $199.9m on May 4, $214.6m on May 26 and $232.8m by June 22.
This represents an increase of $59.2m, or 34 per cent, within three months.
Including the additional $5.8m received outside the HNRP, Nigeria’s total humanitarian funding reached $247.3m as of June 22, leaving a funding shortfall of $274.8m against its 2026 humanitarian requirement.
The reports also recorded an additional inflow of $11m between June 15 and June 22, representing a five per cent increase.
The recovery in 2026 follows a sharp decline in humanitarian funding recorded in 2025.
OCHA data showed that by mid-June 2024, West and Central Africa had received $2.06bn in humanitarian funding.
By the same period in 2025, funding had dropped to $818.83m, representing a decline of more than 60 per cent.
However, by June 2026, total regional funding had rebounded to $2.02bn.
Nigeria also experienced a drop in humanitarian funding in 2025.
According to OCHA’s February 23, 2026 report covering the completed 2025 funding cycle, the country received $321.5m against a funding requirement of $910.2m, leaving a shortfall of nearly $589m.

For 2026, Nigeria’s HNRP funding requirement was reduced to $516.4m from $910.2m in the previous year.
Across the region’s 17 humanitarian clusters, Food Security recorded the largest funding requirement at $1.803bn but remained the most underfunded, with only 11 per cent of its HNRP requirement covered.
The Refugees cluster, which supports displacement responses affecting Nigeria’s North-East and North-West, received $189.8m within its HNRP and an additional $91.7m outside it, bringing total funding to $281.5m, or 20 per cent of its $950.2m requirement.
The report also showed that between December 2025 and May 2026, the number of internally displaced persons in Nigeria’s North-West increased by 143,189, driven largely by a more than twofold increase in the IDP population in Sokoto State.
This pushed the total number of displaced persons in the zone to 793,534.
The Health cluster received $93.8m, representing 27 per cent of its funding target, while Nutrition attracted $75.9m, representing 15 per cent.
The Protection cluster secured $83.4m, equivalent to 27 per cent of its requirement.
Child Protection recorded the fastest growth in funding, rising by 21 per cent over the past six months.
Among the countries assessed, Nigeria ranked second only to the Democratic Republic of Congo in HNRP funding coverage.
The DRC achieved 53 per cent coverage against a funding requirement of $1.4bn, while Nigeria reached 47 per cent.
The Central African Republic followed with 31 per cent, Chad 28 per cent, Cameroon 24 per cent, Mali 18 per cent, while Burkina Faso and Niger each recorded 15 per cent.
Despite its strong funding coverage, Nigeria’s 2026 funding requirement of $516.4m remains significantly lower than Chad’s $986.1m and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s $1.4bn.
The World Food Programme and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees remained the largest recipients of humanitarian funding across the region, receiving $213.5m and $197m respectively as of June 22.
Other major recipients included UNICEF with $63.9m, the International Committee of the Red Cross with $72.3m, Action Against Hunger with $81m and the International Rescue Committee with $26.5m.
