LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigerian rapper Ycee has warned that society is increasingly rewarding ignorance over education, saying the growing trend could damage the future of younger Nigerians.
During a recent interview, the music star addressed what he sees as a steady decline in academic excellence and a worrying shift in the kind of values society now celebrates.
He said Nigeria appears to be moving away from rewarding education, intelligence and hard work while they promote shallow contents online.
According to the rapper, fewer young people seem interested in school, but controversial online fame which he described as “Peller culture” is becoming more attractive.

“Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. People don’t even want to go to school anymore. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a ‘Peller culture,’” he said.
Ycee went further by calling the trend as an “Olodo uprising,” arguing that ignorance is gradually being normalized instead of challenged.
He maintained that the situation is especially troubling at a time when Nigeria’s education sector is already dealing with serious setbacks, particularly with banditry and insecurity.
“This ‘Olodo’ uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority. The massive attack on Nigeria’s educational system is alarming, aside from kidnappings and Boko Haram attacks,” YCee added.
The rapper also questioned the kind of message being passed to young people when people can become rich, famous and influential through content he considers controversial or lacking substance.
