ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 421 criminal suspects, rescued 23 kidnapped victims, recovered 51 firearms and secured 62 convictions in a sustained crackdown on crime across the state between March and June 2026.
Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this on Wednesday while welcoming the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during an official visit to the command headquarters in Enugu.
Giwa said the arrests cut across kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, rape, cultism, illegal possession of firearms and other criminal offences, adding that the command had intensified intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks operating within and around the state.
According to him, 13 kidnapping suspects, 21 armed robbery suspects, 18 murder suspects, 22 rape and defilement suspects, 23 cultism suspects and 26 persons linked to unlawful possession of firearms were arrested during the period under review.
The police commissioner further revealed that operatives rescued 23 kidnapped victims and recovered 51 firearms, including 10 AK-47 rifles, as well as 348 rounds of assorted ammunition and 76 vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles linked to criminal activities.
He said the command recorded major breakthroughs in anti-kidnapping operations, including the rescue of abducted victims in Udenu Local Government Area and the dismantling of syndicates involved in online luring and ransom collection.

The command also foiled an attempted kidnapping along the Nowas-Abakpa Road axis, neutralising a suspect and recovering an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
On prosecution efforts, Giwa disclosed that 176 cases had been charged to court, 321 suspects prosecuted and 62 convicted, while 226 persons are currently awaiting trial.
The commissioner maintained that Enugu remains one of the most peaceful states in the South-East but noted that the command continues to confront security threats such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cult violence, farmer-herder clashes, human trafficking and crimes linked to individuals exploiting the guise of IPOB and ESN activities.
He added that the command has strengthened collaboration with other security agencies, forest guards and neighbourhood watch groups while leveraging technology-driven initiatives such as the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre established by the state government.
Despite the successes, Giwa appealed to the Inspector-General of Police for additional manpower, logistics support, operational assets and improved welfare for officers to sustain the fight against crime across the state.
