ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has called for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu, citing worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and what he described as broad governance failures in the country.
Obi made the call in a post on X, where he referenced recent political developments in the United Kingdom involving British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced plans to step down in July amid public frustration over economic and policy concerns.
He said the UK leader’s announcement reflected the importance of accountability in democratic governance and used it as a lens to assess Nigeria’s situation.
Drawing comparisons, Obi recalled Nigeria’s political climate before the 2015 elections, referencing criticism of then-President Goodluck Jonathan, particularly during the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction crisis, when resignation calls were also made over insecurity and economic challenges.

He further pointed to campaign promises made by Tinubu during the 2023 elections, including improved electricity supply, stronger anti-corruption efforts, and better living conditions for Nigerians, arguing that these commitments had not been fulfilled.
According to him, Nigeria’s current reality reflects worsening power supply, rising insecurity, deepening inflationary pressures, and declining performance across key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, and governance.
Obi concluded by insisting that resignation would reinforce democratic accountability and set a precedent for leadership responsibility in Nigeria’s political system.
He argued that public office should remain a “sacred trust” rather than an entitlement, adding that only accountability could restore public confidence in governance.
