LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- In a residential hall at the University of Lagos, what began as an ordinary week for students on June 15, 2026 reportedly turned into a sudden health concern that disrupted daily life inside the hostel.
Students had been using the same water supply they relied on for drinking, cooking, and washing.
It appeared clean and flowed normally from the taps, as it always had. There was nothing visually unusual about it, and for most students, it was treated as safe by default, as is often the case in shared residential environments where water is assumed to be fit for use unless proven otherwise.
But within a short period, some students began to fall ill.
Reports from affected residents described symptoms consistent with acute gastrointestinal distress including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, and general weakness.
In several cases, students were reportedly too weak to continue normal daily activities and required medical attention off-campus.
At first, the cause was not clear. Attention initially turned to food prepared within the hostel environment.
According to Kehinde Lawal, a student and resident of the hall whose mother is a journalist and shared the information with Voice of Naija Communications, shared meals and cooking arrangements in communal kitchens were suspected, especially after students observed that some food items appeared to spoil faster than expected, sometimes within hours of preparation.

However, as more cases were reportedly recorded among students who had not shared the same meals, concern began to shift toward the water source itself.
She said that water began carrying an unusual smell, though this was not consistently perceived by everyone as some students said they detected no visible or sensory change at all.

The water remained clear in appearance, reinforcing the assumption that it was safe for use.
Yet the situation raised growing concern within the hostel community, particularly as illness appeared to affect multiple students within a short timeframe.
As concerns mounted, the University of Lagos said it had begun assessing the campus water supply system and conducting water quality tests to determine the accuracy of reports of contamination. In a statement signed by Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the University’s Communication Unit, management said immediate interventions had also been introduced to protect students’ health and welfare while urging members of the campus community to avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continued.
In environments like student residences, where water is shared collectively and used across multiple points, drinking, cooking, cleaning, identifying contamination early is often difficult.
Unlike visible hazards, waterborne risks are not always detectable through appearance, and sensory indicators such as smell or taste can vary from person to person.
By the time questions began to circulate more widely among students, the disruption had already affected health routines and daily life in the hall.
Many students ran home, including Kehinde Lawal who became tired of buying sachet water to cook and clean.
Her mother told Voice of Naija Communications that she prefers to give her daughter daily transportation instead of leaving her to use the bad water.

The incident, as described by those affected, reflected a broader reality in many shared living environments, water safety is often assumed rather than verified, until illness forces attention.
It is precisely this gap — between assumption and certainty — that continues to define water safety challenges in many parts of Nigeria.
Nestlé, Nigeria’s Effort To Make Water Safer
Just two months earlier, in April 2, 2026, Nestlé Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the Organised Private Sector in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (OPS-WASH), moved to address this broader challenge through a national intervention focused on awareness and behaviour change.
In Abuja, the partners launched the National Water Quality Advocacy Handbook at the Annual Water Quality Conference hosted by the Ministry — a document designed to translate technical water safety knowledge into practical guidance for everyday users.
The handbook is positioned as a tool to bridge a persistent gap: the difference between water that appears safe and water that is actually safe for consumption.

It provides guidance on identifying risks in water sources, safe handling and storage practices, household treatment methods, and community-level protection strategies.
Its central message is that water safety cannot be determined by appearance alone, and that invisible contamination remains one of the most persistent public health risks in Nigeria, just like we saw in the UNILAG case.
Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, said the initiative reflects the need to strengthen both infrastructure and public awareness in addressing water quality challenges.
“Improving water quality outcomes in Nigeria requires sustained public awareness and education,” he said. “Individuals and communities must be equipped with the knowledge to adopt safe practices and protect their health.”
He emphasised that water safety outcomes depend not only on supply systems but also on how water is handled at the point of use — in homes, schools, and communities where contamination can occur after collection.
The handbook was developed through collaboration between government, private sector actors, and civil society organisations working within the water, sanitation, and hygiene space. Nestlé Nigeria, through its sustainability and water stewardship agenda, played a key role in supporting its development alongside OPS-WASH.
Speaking through its Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Lead, Victoria Uwadoka, the company noted that water is central to public health, food systems, and economic stability, and that protecting it requires shared responsibility across sectors.

OPS-WASH National Coordinator, Dr. Nicholas Igwe, also highlighted the importance of translating technical knowledge into consistent community-level practice.
He noted that many water challenges persist not only because of infrastructure gaps, but because of limited awareness of safe handling practices.
The launch of the handbook comes at a time when water security remains a pressing issue across Nigeria, particularly in communities where access does not always guarantee safety.
In such contexts, water is often used based on assumption rather than verification, making education and awareness critical components of public health protection.
Beyond Nigeria, water security has also become a central focus of continental policy discussions.
From National Effort To Continental Action
Also, in Abuja, on April 22, just 20 days after the handbook launch, Nigeria hosted a high-level engagement between the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and a delegation from the African Union Commission, alongside the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), as part of renewed efforts to strengthen cooperation on safe water and sanitation across Africa.
The delegation, led by Harsen Nyambe of the African Union Commission’s Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy directorate, included senior officials responsible for implementing continental water governance frameworks.

Discussions focused on accelerating implementation of the Africa Water Vision 2063 and aligning national efforts with the African Union’s 2026 Theme of the Year, which prioritises sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems.
Nigeria’s Minister described the engagement as a reflection of shared continental commitment to water security, noting that water is central to food production, industrial development, and climate resilience across Africa.
AMCOW representatives, in turn, acknowledged Nigeria’s longstanding leadership role in African water governance, particularly as host of the AMCOW Secretariat since 2002, and emphasised the importance of translating policy frameworks into practical, measurable outcomes.
Taken together, the university incident in Lagos, the national handbook launch in Abuja, and the continental policy discussions reflect different layers of the same challenge.

At the most immediate level, water safety is experienced in dormitories, homes, and communities where risks are not always visible.
At the institutional level, it becomes a matter of education, awareness, and behavioural change.
At the continental level, it is framed within long-term development agendas and governance structures.
But across all three levels, the underlying issue remains consistent which is that water is often assumed to be safe until it is proven otherwise, sometimes only after health consequences have already emerged.
The student experience illustrates how quickly that assumption can be disrupted.
The policy response demonstrates how governments and institutions are attempting to close the gap between access and safety.
And the continental dialogue shows that the challenge is no longer national alone, but part of a broader African development priority.
In that space between assumption and certainty lies the core of the water challenge and increasingly, the focus of those working to solve it is not only on supplying water, but on ensuring it is understood.
Because water, in its most basic form, does not warn before it fails.
And when it does, it is often the human body that becomes the first indicator that something was wrong all along.
