LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- A fresh Spotify ranking dominated by Nigerian singers has sparked fresh debate about the state of rap music after rapper Odumodublvck declared that “Hip-Hop is dead,.”
The rapper, known for his hit song ‘Declan Rice’, stirred reactions on X after commenting on a ranking of Nigerian artists with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify.
Reacting to the list, he wrote, “Hip Hop is dead,” a remark many interpreted as a reference to the absence of rappers among the country’s most-streamed artists on the platform.
His statement quickly divided opinion online. While some agreed that rap music has lost commercial ground in Nigeria, many others accused the rapper of disrespecting a genre that continues to thrive globally.

The debate intensified after fans pointed out that hip-hop remains one of the most influential music genres worldwide despite its reduced presence on Nigeria’s streaming charts.
Notably, the current Spotify ranking is dominated entirely by singers.
At the top of the list is Burna Boy with 40.68 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Tems with 40.64 million.
Rema occupies third place with 29.43 million listeners, while Ayra Starr and Wizkid round out the top five with 16.84 million and 16.81 million listeners respectively.
The remaining spots are held by Omah Lay, Davido, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Asake, further highlighting the dominance of Afrobeats and other singing-focused genres on the platform.
