LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Media personality Daddy Freeze has revealed why he left the service of songs held for late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, saying the event felt more like a concert than a memorial.
Speaking in a video that has since gone viral, Daddy Freeze said he left the event because the atmosphere created by some gospel performances did not match what he believes a memorial service should be.
The broadcaster specifically mentioned gospel stars Mercy Chinwo and Nathaniel Bassey, whose ministrations he felt transformed the gathering into a worship concert rather than a solemn remembrance ceremony.
“We are sitting down minding our business and then Nathaniel Bassey blows the trumpet. Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert, and I got up and left,” Daddy Freeze said.
He argued that services of songs should focus on reflection, comfort, and quiet remembrance rather than energetic performances.
“Do you understand what a funeral is? It’s soft music,” he added.
He stressed that the celebrity memorial became more celebratory than reflective.

The service of songs for Alexx Ekubo was held on June 10, at The Monarch Event Center in Lekki, Lagos, where family, friends, industry stars, and well-wishers came to honour the late actor.
Ekubo passed away on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40, after privately battling stage-four liver cancer.
Despite undergoing a liver transplant, he suffered further complications that eventually led to his death.
Meanwhile, preparations for his final burial rites are ongoing. A wake is scheduled for June 17 at his hometown in Arochukwu, Abia State, while his funeral service and interment will take place on June 18.
