LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Renowned Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has made public a letter accusing Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos of attempting to cover up circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Adichie-Esege.
Adichie shared the letter, dated April 16, 2026, on her Facebook page on Saturday, explaining that she chose to speak out because “to keep silent about Euracare’s evil is to enable it.”
In the letter, the celebrated author alleged that Euracare’s Medical Director, Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, admitted shortly after the tragedy that the hospital’s anaesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, failed to meet the required standard of care.
According to Adichie, Majekodunmi told her that Ogundare had administered “too much propofol” to her son.
She said the doctor later visited the family at their Ikoyi residence, accepted responsibility for the incident, and promised that disciplinary action would be taken.

However, Adichie claimed communication from the medical director suddenly stopped after Euracare management became involved.
The author also challenged the cause of death listed on her son’s death certificate, which reportedly cited bacterial and fungal meningitis.
“When Nkanu came to Euracare that morning for tests, he was conscious and talking and interactive. He was sick but he was not critical,” she stated.
She argued that the certificate should instead reflect what she believes caused the child’s death: improper sedation, hypoxic brain injury, and cardiac arrest.
Furthermore, Adichie alleged that a senior figure connected to the hospital’s ownership warned a family member against pursuing legal action, claiming negative information could be used against her during a court battle.
Describing the message as “manipulative and implicitly threatening,” she insisted the family would not be deterred.
“They can drag all they wish in the mud, but our quest for justice will continue,” she added.
Attention has also turned to the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the case.
Vowing to continue her pursuit of justice, Adichie stated that Euracare initially requested a coroner’s inquest in January due to concerns about possible negligence but later adopted measures she described as attempts to delay the process.
“If Euracare cares about the truth, then why create delays and distractions and now, finally, try to stop an inquest?” Adichie asked.

The legal dispute intensified after the Lagos State High Court granted the hospital permission on May 26 to challenge the jurisdiction of the Coroner’s Court, leading to a temporary suspension of the inquest until a judicial review application is determined.
The matter has been adjourned until October 8, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), and the Chief Coroner of Lagos State have opposed the hospital’s application, calling it premature and an abuse of court process.
Nkanu, the elder of Adichie’s twin sons, died on January 7, 2026, following complications linked to sedation procedures at the hospital.
Following the incident, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria suspended Dr. Ogundare, Dr. Majekodunmi, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital pending disciplinary proceedings.
Euracare had not publicly responded to Adichie’s allegations as at press time.
