ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has revealed that schoolchildren and teachers abducted nearly four weeks ago in Oriire Local Government Area are still being held by their captors within the Old Oyo National Park axis.
Makinde disclosed this in his Newsletter No. 140 released on Friday, citing intelligence reports that traced the abductees to the expansive forest area, where ongoing rescue operations are being complicated by difficult terrain and the vast size of the park.
The governor said security agencies remain focused on securing the release of the victims, who were kidnapped on May 15 during attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School, Esiele.
The terrorists reportedly killed a teacher and abducted more than 45 pupils and teachers during the attacks, throwing the affected communities into grief and uncertainty.

According to Makinde, 27 days after the abduction, families of the victims continue to endure pain and anxiety as they await the safe return of their loved ones.
He noted that although the state government has repeatedly assured residents that the victims would be rescued, he understood the growing concerns of families as the days continue to pass.
The governor, however, maintained that security agencies have not relented in their efforts, stressing that, “Every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the safe release of the abductees.
“Intelligence reports indicate that the victims are still being held within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis, a vast expanse covering approximately 2,500 square kilometres across parts of ten Local Government Areas in Oyo.
“The size and difficult terrain of the area pose significant operational challenges for security personnel, requiring patience, strategic coordination and sustained efforts to ensure a successful rescue operation.”
Makinde called on residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615.
He also cautioned against the dissemination of unverified information, warning that, “Misinformation can compromise ongoing rescue efforts and hinder security operations.”
The governor appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information and to keep the abducted pupils and teachers in their prayers as efforts to secure their release continue.
