LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Thailand has lost one of its most respected royal figures following the death of Princess Bajrakitiyabha at the age of 47.
The princess, the eldest child of King Vajiralongkorn, spent more than three years in a coma after she suddenly collapsed in December 2022 while exercising her dogs.
Reports state that the incident was linked to a severe heart condition triggered by a mycoplasma infection.
Thailand’s royal household confirmed on Friday that the princess passed away at Chulalongkorn Hospital where she received intensive treatment and round-the-clock medical care.
In a statement announcing her death, the palace said, “The medical team provided the closest and most intensive care possible, but her condition continued to decline progressively.”
Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely admired in the Southeast Asian country and beyond for her work in law, diplomacy and social justice.
She was an active fitness enthusiast who participated in endurance sports and was loved by many.
Her death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Thailand, bringing an end to years of uncertainty surrounding one of the country’s most prominent royal figures.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha, a key figure in the country’s political system, was being viewed by many as a likely heir to the throne.
For many Thais, Princess Bajrakitiyabha represented a rare blend of royalty, intellect and public service.
A trained lawyer with postgraduate degrees from Cornell University in the United States, she built a reputation that stretched far beyond palace walls.
Unlike many royals whose duties remain largely ceremonial, Bajrakitiyabha established herself in criminal justice reform which earned her praise both at home and internationally.
