LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran actor, scholar and theatre icon Professor Kola Oyewo has died, leaving a lasting mark on generations of actors, students and culture enthusiasts.
The death of the revered actor with decades-long contribution to Yoruba theatre and performing arts was announced on Friday by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, through a message shared on Facebook.
He passed away at the age of 80, ending a remarkable career that spanned the worlds of theatre, education and cultural preservation.
Sharing the news, Adetoyese paid tribute to his father’s life, describing him as a man known for compassion, wisdom and strength.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father,” he wrote.
He added that while the family is deeply saddened by the loss, they remain thankful for the impactful life Professor Oyewo lived and the countless people he inspired throughout his journey.
According to him, the late actor’s influence will continue to live on through the memories of family members, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched.
Furthermore, he appealed for prayers and support during the difficult period, noting that the family is celebrating a life devoted to service, education and the arts.

Professor Oyewo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected theatre practitioners.
Over the years, he played a major role in preserving Yoruba theatre traditions while promoting Nigerian culture through stage plays and films, earning respect for his powerful performances and cultural values.
He was also a distinguished academic whose work helped shape the development of theatre arts in Nigeria.
Paying tribute to Oyewo, actor and producer Kunle Afod who visited him in April this year described him as a “remarkable talent” who will continue to inspire future generations.
“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, Sir. Your work lives on,” he wrote.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues in the movie industry and educational communities, former students, fans and cultural figures, many of whom remember him as a passionate teacher, accomplished performer and tireless advocate for Nigerian arts and culture.
