LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran actress Toyin Adewale has shared the remarkable story of how a simple Instagram cover recorded by her son, Mayorkun, unexpectedly caught Davido’s attention and became the turning point that launched his music career.
Speaking on the Talk with B podcast, the actress recalled how the family had no idea that a casual cover of Davido’s hit song would eventually open the door to stardom.
According to her, Mayorkun had visited his cousin in Lekki and decided to spend time in a music room where he recorded himself singing a cover of Davido’s song ‘Money’.
After posting the video online, events unfolded faster than anyone expected.

“There is nothing God cannot do. We weren’t expecting it. He just left for his cousin’s place at Lekki, and when he got there, he went to the music room and was playing Davido’s song and posted it on the internet. Before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover for ‘Money’ and posted it on Instagram, and it got to Davido,” she said.
She admitted that the excitement was initially mixed with doubt when Davido reached out.
Adewale revealed that family members struggled to believe the message was genuine and feared it could be a scam.
“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognized his voice, they jumped in excitement. Davido told him he liked the song and asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he sent him a whole box of gifts,” she added.

Soon after, Davido invited Mayorkun to work with him in the studio.
Their collaboration eventually produced the hit song ‘Eleko’, a record that launched Mayorkun’s career and introduced him to a wider audience.
The actress said the success of the song changed Mayorkun’s life almost overnight.
In their Ajah neighbourhood, residents became so familiar with the breakthrough hit that they nicknamed the family “Oriyami Eleko,” a line from the song’s chorus.
Today, Mayorkun remains one of Nigeria’s most successful Afrobeats stars with many hits songs, standout performances and notable collaborations.
