ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has described June 12 as the foundation of Nigeria’s democratic journey, urging citizens and leaders alike to use the annual commemoration as an opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation’s democracy, governance and institutions.
Obi made the remarks in a message posted on his Facebook page to mark Democracy Day, where he said June 12 remains one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s political history and a symbol of the people’s enduring commitment to democratic ideals.
According to him, the observance should go beyond remembrance and serve as a moment for critical assessment of the country’s democratic progress and the performance of its leadership.
He noted that the annual commemoration raises important questions about the credibility of elections, the strength of democratic institutions and the extent to which government continues to uphold its obligations to citizens.
“Every year on June 12, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of our nation,” Obi wrote.
He said the date has become a benchmark through which Nigerians evaluate the health of the country’s democracy and measure progress in governance and nation-building.
