LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Millions of users worldwide were unable to access Facebook and Instagram on Friday after a widespread outage disrupted Meta’s major social media platforms, triggering login failures and sparking complaints across multiple countries.
The disruption affected most of Meta owned platforms, including Facebook’s website, mobile app, and Messenger service, with many users reporting that they were suddenly logged out.
Attempts to sign back in were unsuccessful, with users receiving messages stating that “an unexpected error occurred.”
Visitors to Facebook’s website were also met with a notice indicating that the company was working to fix the problem.
Notably, reports of the outage quickly spread on social media platform X, where users gathered to confirm whether others were experiencing similar issues.

Although Facebook and Instagram appeared to be the hardest-hit services, WhatsApp remained largely functional despite sharing some infrastructure with other Meta products.
However, a number of users also reported difficulties accessing Instagram through its web platform.
The outage appeared to have a global impact, with complaints emerging from several countries within a short period.
Downdetector, a website that tracks online service disruptions, recorded a sharp rise in reports linked to Facebook and related Meta services before experiencing technical issues of its own.
Ultimately, the incident highlighted the dependence of millions of people on Meta’s platforms for communication, business, and social interaction, with users awaiting further clarification on what caused the widespread service failure.
