ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence indicating a potential kidnapping threat targeting students in the area.
The directive was conveyed in a circular issued by the State Ministry of Education and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Enodolomwanyi Otamere.
The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The decision followed a security report by the Department of State Services, which allegedly uncovered plans by suspected bandits to carry out a mass abduction of schoolchildren in Edo North Senatorial District.
According to a security memo dated June 5, intercepted communications between two suspected bandits revealed discussions about targeting students after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals reportedly failed to generate the desired financial returns.

The report indicated that the suspects believed the abduction of schoolchildren could attract greater government attention and increase the likelihood of securing substantial ransom payments and other concessions.
Security concerns were heightened after the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect on June 4 while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke community, one of the schools affected by the closure order.
The intelligence report suggested that preparations for the planned operation may already have been underway, prompting security agencies to recommend enhanced protection around schools and other educational institutions, particularly in Edo North.
The DSS also advised the deployment of additional security personnel, stronger collaboration among security agencies, local vigilante groups and hunters, as well as increased patrols and surveillance in vulnerable communities.
Explaining the government’s decision, Otamere said the closure was based on security advisories warning of threats to students, teachers and surrounding communities.
“The Ministry of Education has received intelligence reports and advisories from relevant security agencies regarding credible threats to the safety of students, staff, and school communities in some parts of Akoko Edo Local Government Area,” he said.
He noted that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools had been suspended indefinitely as part of measures to protect lives and property.
However, candidates participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination will continue to access their examination centres under strict security arrangements.
“Candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision as may be provided by the relevant security agencies and community stakeholders,” he said.
The permanent secretary directed school principals to ensure the orderly release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities, and maintain close communication with government authorities and security agencies.
He also appealed to parents and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives as efforts continue to address the threat and restore normal academic activities.
