ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Nigeria’s national grid is set to gain an additional 220 megawatts of electricity following new developments in the power sector.
This follows the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) formal approval granting Mainstream Energy access to begin work on the Kainji Hydro Power Plant switchyard units 1G3.
TCN confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, noting that the site handover took place on Friday, 5 June 2026.

According to the agency, the handover of the 2x330kV bays’ construction site is aimed at enabling the commencement of construction activities, including civil, electrical and mechanical works, as well as testing, commissioning, and other approved project components.
“After completion, the 220MW-capacity bays will enable the evacuation of the two additional IG3 and IG4 turbines with the capacity to generate 110MW each, totaling 220MW, which are to be installed in Kainji power station,” TCN stated.
