Lagos, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The NNPC Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of NNPC Limited, has strengthened Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure with the donation and commissioning of a fully installed 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at the National Orthopaedic Hospital (NOH), Dala, Kano State.
The intervention is expected to significantly improve access to advanced diagnostic services, reduce patient referrals, shorten waiting times and enhance treatment outcomes for thousands of patients across Kano State and the wider North-West region.
According to a statement signed by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, the MRI facility will support the diagnosis and management of orthopaedic, neurological, trauma, musculoskeletal and gynaecological conditions, addressing a longstanding gap in access to specialised imaging services.
Prior to the installation of the equipment, many patients requiring MRI scans reportedly travelled long distances to access diagnostic services, often facing delays in treatment due to limited availability and high costs.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Kano on Thursday, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., represented by the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the project aligns with the company’s broader objective of creating sustainable social impact through strategic investments in critical sectors.

“At NNPC Limited, we are intentional about ensuring that our social investments are impactful, sustainable and beneficial to the communities we serve. Through the NNPC Foundation, we will continue to implement interventions that create measurable social value across Nigeria,” she said.
Arukwe noted that the MRI donation comes at a critical time when healthcare facilities across the country face increasing pressure from infrastructure deficits, equipment shortages and growing demand for specialised medical services.
She described the project as a strategic contribution towards strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem and improving the quality of care available to citizens.
Also speaking, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPC Ltd., Sophia Mbakwe, represented by the Executive Director, Programme Management, NNPC Foundation, Rose Okonkwo, said the intervention reflects NNPC’s commitment to delivering value beyond its core energy business.
According to her, the company remains focused on improving the well-being of Nigerians through scalable and sustainable initiatives that support national development.

Through this project, NNPC Limited aims to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve the quality of life of residents of Kano State, the North-West region and all Nigerians who depend on the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, for specialised medical care,” she said.

Representing Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, described the donation as a major milestone for healthcare delivery in the state, noting that access to advanced diagnostic equipment would facilitate earlier detection of medical conditions and improve patient outcomes.
The Chief Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Isa Nurudeen, expressed appreciation to NNPC Ltd. for the intervention, describing the MRI system as a transformative addition that would enhance the hospital’s diagnostic capacity and operational efficiency.
Industry analysts note that investments in modern diagnostic equipment are increasingly becoming critical to improving healthcare outcomes, reducing medical tourism and strengthening the capacity of public health institutions across Nigeria.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by officials of NNPC Ltd., management and staff of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, government representatives, healthcare professionals, community leaders and other stakeholders.
