LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- A team of scientists from the University of Cambridge and biotechnology company DIOSynVax has achieved a significant milestone in vaccine research after successfully completing the first human trial of a universal coronavirus vaccine, designed using artificial intelligence (AI).
The breakthrough, announced in a report published by the University of Cambridge, highlights how AI is transforming modern medicine by helping researchers develop vaccines capable of protecting against entire families of viruses rather than a single disease.
The early-stage clinical trial involved 39 healthy volunteers and found the experimental vaccine to be safe, with no serious side effects reported.
Unlike traditional vaccines, which are often redesigned to keep up with emerging virus variants, the new vaccine uses AI technology to create what researchers describe as a “super-antigen.”
This component is built from genetic traits shared by multiple viruses, allowing the immune system to recognize a broader range of threats.
Researchers explained that the vaccine targets Sarbeco coronaviruses, a group that includes SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, the SARS virus, and related bat coronaviruses that could potentially infect humans in the future.
“This represents a fundamental new vaccine technology that could prevent future pandemics before they begin,” researchers stated.
The AI-driven approach aims to shift vaccine development from reacting to outbreaks to anticipating them.

By identifying common features across virus families, scientists hope to protect millions of people by creating long-lasting protection against both existing viruses and future pandemics before they emerge.
Research Lead at the University of Cambridge, Professor Jonathan Heeney, said the technology could transform the way vaccines are developed.
“We’ve converted vaccine development from being reactive to being future proof. Our vaccines will continue to provide protection against viruses even as they mutate into new strains. We’ve overcome the problem of traditional vaccines, which have limited protection. It means we can escape the constant cycle of chasing the virus variants circulating in humans and updating the vaccines to try to catch up, like a dog chasing its tail.”
The vaccine was tested at clinical research facilities in Cambridge and Southampton using a needle-free jet delivery system.
Early findings showed that participants developed immune responses not only against known coronaviruses such as COVID-19 but also against related animal viruses that have not yet caused outbreaks in humans.
According to the Chief investigator of the trial, Professor Saul Faust, the technology could provide broad protection against future health threats.
“This new class of universal vaccines are future-proofed. They not only protect against many variants simultaneously, but potentially against related viruses that haven’t yet emerged and spilt over to humans. If we can develop and clinically advance this new class of vaccines before a virus outbreak begins, millions of lives could be saved, lockdowns avoided and the economy preserved,” Faust explained.
Researchers also believe the AI-powered platform could eventually be adapted for other dangerous diseases, including influenza and Ebola.

The possibility has generated excitement among public health experts searching for more effective ways to prepare for future outbreaks.
Despite the promising results, scientists caution that the vaccine remains in the early stages of development.
Notably, a larger Phase 2 trial will be required to determine how effective it is across a wider and more diverse population.
Professor Marian Knight of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Infrastructure programme said collaboration between scientific institutions and research facilities played a crucial role in reaching this stage.
“This milestone was only made possible through partnerships between the life sciences sector and our world-class NIHR infrastructure… whose Clinical Research Facilities provided the vital expertise and environment needed to safely fast-track this innovation…,” she said.
Funded primarily by Innovate UK, the study represents one of the first successful real-world tests of an AI-designed vaccine in humans.
Researchers maintained that the long-term vision is to use AI to create vaccines that provide broad protection against entire virus families and helps the world stay ahead of future pandemics.
