ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has said that Nigerian security agencies already possess the capacity to trace and apprehend bandits and kidnappers operating openly across the country.

Buratai made the remark during an interview on TVC on Monday, expressing disbelief that criminal groups who openly publicise their activities on social media are still able to evade capture.

He questioned the logic behind claims that security forces are unable to locate such groups, especially when, according to him, they are capable of tracking ordinary citizens and online influencers.

“I don’t think they failed to locate. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they can locate these bandits that flaunt their loot or whatever activities they do,” he said.

While he did not directly accuse security agencies of negligence, the former army chief suggested that operational considerations may be influencing responses to the situation.

He stressed the need for sustained investment in training, manpower development, and improved welfare for personnel across the nation’s security institutions.

“There must be capacity building of all the security agencies, and continuously,” he said, adding that more operatives and policemen are needed.

Buratai also noted that the Nigerian military has specialized units trained for complex rescue and combat operations, including the Navy’s Special Boat Service and the Army’s Special Forces. However, he explained that concerns about hostage safety and the risk of civilian casualties often shape how such operations are carried out.

He further called for a stronger counter-terrorism framework, recommending the expansion of the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser.

According to him, establishing state-level branches equipped with modern technology and improved coordination systems would significantly enhance the effectiveness of security operations across the country.
