ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Niger Delta Development Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to driving inclusive and sustainable development for children in the Niger Delta region, stressing the importance of equal opportunities.
The Managing Director of the commission, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, made this known during the 2026 International Children’s Day celebration themed: “The Future Now – Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child”, held at an event centre in Port Harcourt.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, and made available to journalists.
Ogbuku, who was represented by the NDDC Deputy Director of Education, Health, and Social Services, Mrs Chioma Nwakwue, noted that beyond physical infrastructure, the commission places strong emphasis on the development and wellbeing of children in the region.

He stated, “Children’s Day is more than just any celebration.
“It is a reminder of our duty to protect every child in the Niger Delta region and give them equal opportunities, regardless of their diversity and background.
“The 2026 theme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of the Year of Families and Social Development. At the NDDC, we align with the Renewed Hope Agenda to improve education, healthcare, social protection, and economic opportunities for Nigerians.”
The NDDC boss further emphasized that true inclusiveness and sustainable development begin with investing in children.
He added, “Through investments in education, healthcare, school infrastructure, skills, digital empowerment, and social welfare, the NDDC is committed to building a more inclusive and prosperous Niger Delta.”
The 2026 National Children’s Day celebration in Nigeria focused on advancing equal access to quality education, healthcare, digital skills, and child protection for all children across the country.
A guest speaker at the event, Dr Moses Egorerua, urged children to take their education seriously, describing it as a fundamental right and an essential tool for personal and societal growth.
He also encouraged them to use social media positively for learning and self-development, while advising them to engage in community service to build leadership and social responsibility skills.
The event featured the distribution of U-lesson tablets, school bags, and other educational materials to participating children by the NDDC.
