ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said the National Assembly will accelerate support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in strengthening national security and advancing key economic reforms aimed at repositioning the country.
Akpabio made the remarks on Thursday after leading principal officers of the Senate on a Sallah homage visit to President Tinubu at his residence in Lagos.
He said the legislature could not leave governance efforts to the President alone, stressing that collaboration between both arms of government was essential to improve security and economic stability.
According to him, while security challenges still exist, Nigeria has recorded significant improvements compared to previous years, particularly in reducing large-scale insurgent attacks and bombings.
He noted that current security threats are now more targeted, adding that the government is working to strengthen protection around vulnerable areas such as schools, churches, and mosques.

Akpabio also advocated for the creation of a structured state policing system under a national framework, saying it would enhance grassroots security while maintaining proper regulation and accountability.
He explained that lawmakers were considering a model that would include a national police commission to oversee recruitment, training, promotion, and discipline within a decentralised policing structure.
The Senate President further urged citizens to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
On the economy, Akpabio commended the Tinubu administration for what he described as bold reforms that have repositioned Nigeria for growth and stability.
He said the government inherited multiple exchange rate regimes, fuel subsidy burdens, and unsustainable borrowing practices, all of which have since been addressed through ongoing reforms.
Akpabio also noted improvements such as the removal of fuel queues and the harmonisation of tax systems across the country.
He highlighted major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Lagos-Badagry-Sokoto corridor, describing them as transformative investments for economic development and agriculture.
According to him, the National Assembly remains committed to supporting policies and programmes that promote long-term national development.
He added that lawmakers are also considering an increase in funding for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund from 0.5 per cent to one per cent of federation revenue to strengthen police operations and infrastructure.
Akpabio concluded that the delegation also used the visit to pray for national peace, the President, and the safe release of citizens still held in captivity.
