“Celebrities Are Humans Like You” — Nasboi Addresses Celebrity Silence Over Political Issues

LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigerian skit maker and singer Nasboi has reacted to growing criticism directed at celebrities who avoid speaking on political and social issues in the country.

Following the recent attack on a school in Oyo State that sparked national outrage and online conversations, the content creator took to his X account to address the issue of celebrity silence after many users called them out.

Nasboi argued that many Nigerians fail to understand the pressure entertainers face whenever national tragedies or political controversies occur.

He stated that celebrities are often expected to speak on every major issue regardless of their personal views, emotional state, or safety concerns.

Nasboi explained that remaining silent should not automatically be seen as ignorance or lack of compassion.

“People should accept the fact that not everybody has the mind to talk,” he wrote, stressing that individuals react to public matters differently.

Furthermore, Nasboi pointed to the experience of comedian and activist Mr Macaroni, who has repeatedly faced backlash for criticizing government actions and speaking on national issues.

The entertainer suggested that the treatment directed at Mr Macaroni discourages many others from joining political conversations publicly.

He maintained that some of the same people demanding that celebrities speak out are also quick to insult or mock them after they do so.

“Una dey always drag celebrities for not speaking up, but make I remind una of Mr Macaroni. See how dem maltreat am just because he spoke up for everybody. Yet na still people mock am and insult am. You think say other celebrities no dey see all those things?” Nasboi asked.

Nasboi also stated that public figures are ordinary people with personal boundaries, emotions, and opinions.

He noted that just like many Nigerians avoid political discussions in their daily lives, some entertainers also prefer to stay away from such debates completely.

“And make we no forget, just like some of una no dey interested in politics, na so some celebrities no like to involve politically. Celebrities are humans like you,” he stated.

In his view, fame should not automatically force celebrities into activism or public advocacy.
