ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has disclosed details of his recent meeting with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying their discussions focused on Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, and the need for collective national solutions.

Atiku made the revelation in a post shared on his X handle on Thursday following a visit to Amaechi at his Abuja residence.

He said both leaders engaged in “deep and honest conversations” about what he described as the troubling state of the nation, rising economic hardship, insecurity, and the urgent need for patriotic Nigerians to work together to find solutions that could help reposition the country.

According to him, the meeting went beyond formalities, as it centred on critical reflections about governance challenges and the responsibility of political leaders to contribute meaningfully to national recovery efforts.

Atiku also noted that the visit coincided with a birthday celebration for Amaechi, during which he extended his goodwill and shared light-hearted moments, including football banter.

He described Amaechi as “a thoroughly well-loaded Gunner,” adding that the former minister took the jokes in good spirits.

The former vice president further revealed that Amaechi, in the spirit of Rivers hospitality, apologised for not being able to prepare a traditional meal for the visit, promising to make up for it on a future meeting.

The meeting comes shortly after Atiku emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a primary held in Abuja.

He secured 1,846,370 votes to defeat Amaechi, who polled 504,117 votes, and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who scored 177,120 votes.

The result was announced by the party leadership led by former Senate President David Mark, who later presented the party’s flag to Atiku after his victory.

Atiku has since appealed to both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to work with him in strengthening the party ahead of the general elections.

However, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have rejected the outcome of the primary, alleging irregularities in the voting process and questioning the credibility of the exercise.
