ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-In a message commemorating both Eid-el-Kabir and National Children’s Day, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed support for the families of schoolchildren and teachers currently being held by bandits in the state.
It has been nearly two weeks since armed attackers stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, abducting several pupils, including toddlers, alongside their teachers.
During the attack, a teacher identified as Adesiyan Adegboye was killed, while another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly murdered in captivity, sparking public outrage and renewed demands for the swift rescue of the victims.
Posting on his official X handle on Wednesday morning, Makinde acknowledged the pain and uncertainty facing affected families during what would ordinarily be a period of celebration and togetherness.

“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” he wrote.
The governor also reassured residents that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those abducted.
“We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire LGA. May this holy season fill our State with peace.”
Reports indicate that suspected terrorists responsible for abducting the schoolchildren and teachers from the three schools in Oriire LGA established communication with the state government on Saturday, although it remains unclear whether the discussions are being handled directly by the governor or through government representatives.
In Nigeria, May 27 is observed annually as Children’s Day, a celebration dedicated to promoting the welfare, education and protection of children.
This year’s celebration coincided with the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir festivities, one of the major Islamic celebrations symbolising sacrifice and faith.
