ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former President Goodluck Jonathan has held talks with Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio in Freetown, reaffirming his commitment to peace, democratic governance, and regional cooperation in West Africa.
Jonathan disclosed the meeting in a statement shared via his social media account, noting that the engagement focused on strengthening stability across the West African sub-region.
He said the visit was part of his ongoing diplomatic and peace efforts in his capacity as a Special Envoy of President Bola Tinubu, as well as his involvement in regional democracy and mediation platforms.
“Today, I paid a special visit to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio. Our discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and matters relating to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional cooperation within the West African sub-region,” he said.

The former Nigerian president added that the meeting also involved discussions with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the West African Elders Forum.
According to him, the engagements centred on promoting democratic stability and cooperation among West African nations facing political and security challenges.
“I deeply appreciate President Bio for the warm reception, gracious hospitality, and conviviality extended to me during our fruitful engagements,” Jonathan stated.
The visit comes amid renewed political attention on Jonathan following a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja declaring him eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The court held that there was no constitutional barrier preventing him from seeking a return to the presidency, a development that has triggered fresh political debate.
The ruling has also intensified conversations around his future role in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as parties and actors position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
