LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Kannywood film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress Wasila Isma’il, who passed away at the age of 46 after battling a prolonged illness.

Her former husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a social media post on Sunday, revealing that the actress died at the FOMWAN Hospital in Kaduna.

Wasila Isma’il was widely respected in the Hausa movie industry and became one of Kannywood’s familiar faces after starring in the 1999 movie ‘Wasila’, directed by Yakubu Lere alongside veteran actor Ali Nuhu.

The actress began her acting journey in 1998 with the film ‘Jinin Masoya’, before rising to fame through several successful Hausa-language productions.

In an earlier interview, she recalled why the title of the movie ‘Wasila’ was changed from its original name, ‘Jamila’.

“I didn’t like the name Jamila because I feared it might tarnish my name, so I asked for it to be changed, and the director agreed,” she said.

Her death marks another painful loss for the northern entertainment industry, where she remained a respected figure for decades.
