ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The factional leadership of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has adopted him as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Kachikwu’s adoption was announced on Sunday during the faction’s national convention held at A-Class Event Centre in Abuja.
Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Benue State party chairman, Elias Adikwu, said delegates at the convention unanimously ratified Kachikwu’s emergence as the faction’s flag bearer ahead of the next presidential election.
The newly-elected National Chairman of the faction, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, later presented the party’s flag to Kachikwu as a symbol of his mandate to lead the party into the 2027 polls.
The convention also produced a new National Working Committee, NWC, for the faction.
Among those elected were Kingsley Oggah as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Johnny Tovie Derek as Deputy National Chairman, Kennedy O. Odion as National Secretary and Dr Joe Aroh as National Treasurer.
Others included Chief Amirigoye as National Financial Secretary, Dr Chris Ugwu as National Legal Adviser, Elias Adikwu as National Organising Secretary and Patrick Ambut as National Chief Whip.
The development comes weeks after another faction of the ADC, led by former Senate President David Mark, held a separate national convention in Abuja on April 14, 2026.
At that convention, delegates reportedly amended the party’s constitution and confirmed Mark as the substantive National Chairman of the party despite internal disputes and litigation trailing the leadership tussle.
The Mark-led faction had also announced the expulsion of factional chairman Nafiu Bala, Rep. Leke Abejide and some other members over alleged anti-party activities and court actions against the party.
The convention attracted several prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as part of a broader coalition seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
