LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has addressed criticism surrounding her casting in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film adaptation of The Odyssey, saying she remains focused on the story rather than public backlash.
Nyong’o, who will portray both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the highly anticipated Homer epic, spoke about the controversy during an interview with Elle ahead of the movie’s July 17 cinema release.
“The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not. This is a mythological story. I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it, and with the version of this story that he is telling,” she said.
The Kenyan-Mexican star explained that the film’s diverse casting reflects the scale and timeless nature of the story.

“The Odyssey is so grand. It spans worlds. That’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time,” Nyong’o added.
The casting announcement had sparked mixed reactions online, with some users making racially charged comments about her role as Helen of Troy.
Despite this, Nyong’o stressed that her approach to acting goes beyond physical appearance.
“An actor can’t perform beauty. I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” the actress stated.
Meanwhile, acclaimed director Christopher Nolan praised Nyong’o’s performance in the film, describing her as a perfect fit for the iconic role.

“The strength and the poise were so important to the character of Helen, and Lupita makes it look effortless. I was absolutely desperate for her to do the part,” Nolan said.
The movie features a star-studded cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Travis Scott.
Nyong’o also described playing Helen of Troy as a major milestone in her career.
“She is iconic. What more can I say? I’m so deeply honoured to be entrusted with her,” she added.
Notably, movie studio Universal Pictures, is set to release The Odyssey on July 17, making it one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
