ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano State Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, has alleged that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tofa made the allegation on Wednesday during an interview on Arise News programme, where he reacted to ongoing political developments and shifting alliances across the country ahead of the next election cycle.
He claimed that recent political engagements and strategic alignments across Nigeria point to a subtle cooperation between some opposition actors and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that Kwankwaso’s political calculations may ultimately benefit President Tinubu.
According to him, “Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly or strategically working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid. There are political activities and strategic engagements already taking place ahead of 2027, and many of them will eventually favour President Tinubu.”

The spokesperson further alleged that Governor Abba Yusuf had explored possible discussions with President Tinubu on a potential defection to the APC, with Kwankwaso’s approval, adding that former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo was also reportedly supportive of the move.
He also commented on opposition politics in Kano, arguing that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi may struggle to gain political traction in the state due to its ideological and structural dynamics.
“Political acceptance in Kano is shaped by ideology, history and regional considerations,” he said.
Tofa also dismissed reports claiming that about five million people attended a recent political gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, describing the figure as unrealistic and exaggerated.
He maintained that the venue could not accommodate such a crowd, insisting that the actual number was far lower.
“Even major public venues in Kano do not have such capacity. Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people,” he added.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from Kwankwaso were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Kwankwaso remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria, commanding a strong support base through the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Since the 2023 general elections, political tensions have continued to shape relations between Kwankwaso and the Kano State Government, with growing speculation over future alignments ahead of 2027.
