LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Nigerian Academy of Science is set to launch Nigeria’s first science-only museum in Abuja on May 21, with fellowship inductions and a lecture on cancer.

Named the NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, the facility was funded by retired General Theophilus Danjuma before its commissioning in 2025.

Part of the opening activities will include a public lecture titled, “Redefining Cancer Care in the Era of Immunotherapy and Precision Oncology: Implications for Research, Treatment, and Policy in Nigeria.”

The lecture will be delivered by the Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Professor Kunle Odunsi.

Describing the project as a major step toward promoting science innovation and research culture across the country, the academy said it will also introduce interactive exhibitions, educational resources, and research materials.

In a statement released on Friday, the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Professor Abubakar Sambo, alongside the academy’s Public Affairs Secretary, Professor Chinedum Babalola, said the museum would offer visitors an engaging environment for scientific learning.

“The museum and library is expected to serve students, researchers, educators, and the public by fostering curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for science and its role in national development,” the statement read.

The academy explained that the centre would feature organized tours, school visits, and collaborative programmes designed to encourage practical learning experiences.

Furthermore, bookings will be available for schools, groups, and exhibition organizers interested in exploring the facility’s learning opportunities.

According to the statement, the museum is also expected to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education in Nigeria through permanent displays, alongside regularly scheduled themed exhibitions.

“While there are permanent exhibits, there will also be specialized themed exhibitions organized on a regular basis,” the statement added.

To support the long-term growth and sustainability of the museum, the academy called for partnerships with corporate organizations, development agencies, and stakeholders.

Notably, the event will also feature the induction of seven distinguished individuals as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science, marking another major highlight of the historic launch in Abuja.
