LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Fresh details surrounding the death of Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo have emerged, with new revelations shedding light on the health struggles he reportedly faced before his passing on Monday, May 11.
Actor and filmmaker Stanley Ontop, revealed that the late movie star had been secretly battling stage 4 liver cancer since 2024.
His disclosure came shortly after news of Alexx’s death shocked colleagues, fans, and members of Nollywood, many of whom were unaware of his condition.
In an Instagram post shared Tuesday evening, Stanley explained that Alexx underwent extensive medical treatment, including a liver transplant, after doctors diagnosed him with the terminal illness.
According to him, the actor briefly returned to work after the procedure, giving close friends hope that his health was improving.
Soon, further complications reportedly developed after the transplanted liver failed again, causing his condition to worsen before his eventual death.
Stanley also confirmed that Alexx Ekubo’s remains had been deposited in the morgue.
Also, the filmmaker appealed to Nigerians to avoid spreading rumours or unverified stories about the actor’s illness while urging the public to respect the privacy of the grieving family.
“Alex was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer in 2024. After undergoing treatment and a liver transplant, he briefly returned to work. Unfortunately, the liver failed again and complications arose, and his condition deteriorated until his passing,” he stated.
He added, “We kindly ask the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims regarding the cause of his illness. We request that everyone allow Alex to rest in peace and respect the privacy of his family during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, another close associate of the late actor, Godwin Nnadiekwe, shared an emotional tribute revealing that Alexx was fully aware of the seriousness of his illness before his death.
Nnadiekwe revealed that the actor whom be described as a “rare soul” had already prepared his will, a reality that made the loss even more painful to process.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m at a loss for words because this wasn’t the plan. Alex Ekubo, to think you already prepared your will. It’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend. Goodnight Alex. Cancer, you did this one,” he wrote.
Social media has since been flooded with tributes from fans, actors, filmmakers, and supporters celebrating Alexx Ekubo’s talent, charisma, and contribution to Nollywood.
