ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has thrown his weight behind the 2027 senatorial ambition of fellow activist, Aisha Yesufu, while openly criticising her decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.
Sowore, who spoke during an interview on Channels Television, said activists must not stay away from partisan politics if they truly want to change society.
According to him, political participation remains one of the strongest forms of activism capable of transforming governance and improving the lives of citizens.
He said he fully supports Yesufu’s ambition to represent the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, in the Senate, stressing that competent and outspoken Nigerians should not shy away from leadership positions.
“No, I totally support her. I’ve always told her that good people, people who believe that they can do things, should get into politics,” Sowore said.
He added, “The business of politics is actually the biggest activism that has to be done to save society.”

Despite backing her aspiration, Sowore maintained that Yesufu aligned herself with the wrong political platform, insisting she should have joined his party instead.
“So I totally support her, and I hope she wins. Even though I think that she’s in the wrong party, she should have joined our party,” he added.
Yesufu recently dumped the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, where she formally declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Explaining her decision, the activist said her move was driven by a stronger political conviction and her belief in the leadership direction of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
According to her, Obi represents the hope for a better Nigeria and reflects the kind of leadership many Nigerians desire.
“This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she stated.
Yesufu also clarified that she was not joining the NDC merely as a supporter but as an active contestant seeking elective office.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.
She further disclosed that she completed all responsibilities assigned to her in the ADC before exiting the party to ensure a smooth transition.
