LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigerian author Chidera Eggerue has shared her opinion on marriage, gender role, and feminism, saying the institution benefits men more than women.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Eggerue argued that marriage was created in a way that mostly favors men.

She claimed that even financially struggling men often expect domestic support from their partners, whom she described as “maids.”

“Marriage as a system was designed to benefit men and the reason why I say that is that marriage allows for even the poorest of men to still have a maid,” she said.

The author also opened up about dating standards, particularly financially. She insisted that she would walk away from a relationship if her partner lost his financial status.

Eggerue explained that women should not reduce their expectations just to protect a man’s ego.

“And that man I’m with, let’s say he loses his money – cause that’s the thing women hear a lot that ‘you want a rich man what if he loses his money’. Guess what, if he loses his money he loses me too,” she stated.

Furthermore, Eggerue described herself as a voice for confident women who refuse to shrink themselves to make men feel comfortable.

“I’m here to represent women who are not going to bring themselves down to try to make men feel better…” she added.

During the discussion, the podcast host argued that men carry the hardest responsibilities in society.

Eggerue disagreed, insisting that childbirth remains the toughest role because women are the ones who “give life.”

She also maintained that any man who cannot afford her lifestyle should not expect access to her time or attention.

The conversation later shifted to feminism, with the host claiming that lesbian marriages record high levels of divorce and violence.

He used the point to argue that men are not always the problem in relationships.

Eggerue, however, defended feminism, stressing that women’s rights conversations remain important in Nigeria despite opinions dismissing the movement as a “joke.”
