LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared the surprising story behind his close bond with entertainer Charly Boy, revealing how the music star’s devotion to his late father completely changed his opinion of him.
Speaking during the Before Tomorrow Comes podcast shared on YouTube, Obasanjo reflected on his long-standing relationship with Charly Boy’s father, the late Chukwudifu Oputa.

He said Justice Oputa was among the few Nigerians he deeply admired.
“I was close to Charlie Boy’s father, Justice Oputa. I don’t have many friends or many people that I would say I admire, but late Justice Oputa was one Nigerian I could call a friend and one Nigerian I admired,” Obasanjo said.
Obasanjo admitted that his first impression of Charly Boy was not favourable.

The former president explained that the entertainer’s flamboyant style and “jaga-jaga” appearance initially made him see the media personality as the complete opposite of his respected father.
His opinion later changed after visiting Justice Oputa and discovering that the retired judge was living in Charly Boy’s home.
Obasanjo said he was deeply moved by the level of care and attention the entertainer gave to his father.

“If Charlie Boy had been ten times immaculately dressed, he would not have taken care of his father better than I saw him taking care of him,” Obasanjo recounted.
Following that experience, the former president said he began to understand Charly Boy beyond his public image.
He realised that the entertainer’s eccentric lifestyle was tied to his career in entertainment and comedy.
“So, I got drawn to Charlie Boy,” he added.
