ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), declaring her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu announced the move on Wednesday via her X handle, linking her decision to what she described as a clearer understanding of Nigeria’s political future and her continued alignment with Peter Obi.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
She explained that her political journey with the ADC was originally driven by her support for Obi, stressing that her latest move reflects consistency with that position.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.

Beyond switching parties, Yesufu confirmed she would be contesting for elective office for the first time, declaring her ambition to represent the FCT in the Senate under the NDC platform.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
The activist also said she ensured a “clean transition” from the ADC, noting that she had concluded all responsibilities within the party before exiting.
“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she said, describing the experience as “invaluable.”
Her defection comes amid a widening realignment within Nigeria’s opposition space following the recent move by Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC, a development that has triggered a wave of exits from the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
