ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate seeking the screening and confirmation of 15 nominees for appointment into the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s human rights framework.

The letter was read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, formally transmitting the list for legislative consideration.

Tinubu explained that the request aligns with statutory provisions guiding the reconstitution of the commission’s board, as outlined under the NHRC (Establishment) Act, 2010.

Among the nominees is the President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, Eze Anaba, alongside Dr. Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman, who has been nominated as board chairman.

Also nominated is Dr. Anthony Ojukwu (SAN), proposed as Executive Secretary of the commission.

Other members on the list include Roseline Tasha, Ambassador Adam Yubak Baku, ACG Felix Lawrence, Edmund Chinonye, Chinonye Obiaku (SAN), Oluwakemi Asiwaju Okere-Odo, Professor Adedeji Ogunji, Kingsley Chidozie, Mohammed Adelodu, Maupe Ogun Yusuf, and Otunba Francis Meshioye.

Two additional nominees, Patience Patrick and Hawwa Ibrahim, were also listed as members of the proposed board.

Tinubu said the reconstitution is necessary to strengthen the institutional capacity of the NHRC and enhance its ability to promote and protect human rights across the country.

Following the reading of the letter, the Senate referred the nominees to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening, with a directive to report back within two weeks.

If confirmed, the new board is expected to play a central role in reinforcing oversight of human rights issues, especially amid growing national concerns about accountability and rights protection.
