LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The United Nations has published a new report, showing a sharp rise in executions and mass arrests in Iran since the start of the Middle East conflict, raising urgent concerns among humanitarian groups over human rights abuses.
Released on Wednesday, the report states that Iranian authorities have executed at least 21 people and detained more than 4,000 others since the out blown Middle East war.
The crackdown began after US-Israeli strikes in late February triggered deep tensions and sparked protests across the region.
Expanding on the issue, the UN human rights office revealed that nine people linked to protests in Iran in January 2026 were executed.

Also, another 10 people were accused of belonging to opposition groups, while two others faced charges of espionage.
The UN report further estimated that more than 4,000 individuals have been arrested on what authorities describe as national security grounds.
According to the agency, detainees are subjected to serious abuses. Many reportedly faced forced disappearance, torture, or what the UN called “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.”
Some detainees were allegedly pressured into giving confessions, which were in some cases broadcast publicly while others were subjected to mock executions.

“I am appalled that on top of the already severe impacts of the conflict, the rights of the Iranian people continue to be stripped from them by the authorities, in harsh and brutal ways,” said the UN human rights chief Volker Turk.
Appealing to Iranian authorities to stop further executions and respect legal rights, Turk stated, “I call on the authorities to halt all further executions, establish a moratorium on the use of capital punishment, fully ensure due process and fair trial guarantees, and immediately release those arbitrarily detained.”
Human rights groups have long raised concerns about Iran’s use of the death penalty. Amnesty International reported that Iran carries out more executions each year than any nation in the world, excluding China.
Ultimately, the latest figures deepen fears that the ongoing conflict is being used to justify stricter internal control, leaving thousands at risk of abuse and limiting basic freedoms across the country.
