LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Health authorities in Akwa Ibom State have stepped up COVID-19 monitoring following a fresh outbreak in a neighbouring state, with officials urging residents to stay cautious.

The Commissioner for Health, Ekem Emmanuel, disclosed that Governor Umo Eno has directed immediate action to prevent any outbreak within the state.

Surveillance has now been strengthened across entry points, hospitals, and local communities.

“Disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have been placed on red alert to promptly detect and manage any suspected cases,” he said.

In addition, residents have been advised to remain alert and follow basic safety measures.

These include regular handwashing, use of alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing face masks in crowded places, and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms.

“Citizens are also advised to observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces. Citizens are also advised to avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, refrain from handshakes and physical greetings, and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty in breathing occur,” he added.

Meanwhile, healthcare workers across the state have been instructed to stay alert and strictly follow infection prevention guidelines to quickly identify and manage any suspected cases.

To strengthen response efforts, the ministry is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other partners to ensure proper monitoring and coordination.

Officials have also reassured the public of their commitment to protecting lives while warning against spreading unverified information that could trigger panic.

An enquiry desk and helplines have been set up to support residents seeking accurate guidance.

The latest move follows a recent announcement in Cross River State, where Health Commissioner Henry Ayuk, confirmed a new COVID-19 case involving a foreign national.

Ultimately, public health officials continue to stress the importance of vigilance, noting that early detection and responsible behaviour remain key to preventing another widespread outbreak.
