ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A suspect has been taken into custody following a shooting incident at a high-profile media event attended by Donald Trump in Washington.

The authorities have confirmed that he will face federal charges on Monday.

The incident occurred Saturday night during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel, shortly after the opening remarks, sending panic through the venue.

Security personnel responded swiftly as gunfire erupted, with tactical teams moving in and evacuating top officials, including Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior government figures.

Despite the chaos, authorities confirmed that no guests or dignitaries were injured. However, a Secret Service officer was struck in a protective vest and later hospitalised in stable condition.

According to officials, the attacker forced his way through a security checkpoint near the ballroom around 8:36 p.m., triggering an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Metropolitan Police interim chief Jeffrey Carroll said the suspect was heavily armed.

“He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives,” Carroll told reporters, adding that officers quickly intercepted him.

The suspect was not injured during the confrontation but was taken to hospital for evaluation before being placed in custody. Authorities believe he acted alone and may have been staying at the hotel.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that the suspect would be arraigned in federal court on Monday on charges including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer.

While officials have yet to formally confirm his identity, several US media outlets have identified him as a 31-year-old man from California.

President Trump described the attacker as a “lone wolf,” noting that the motive remains unclear.

“He appeared to be sick,” Trump said, as investigations into the incident continue.

The shooting forced the abrupt suspension of one of Washington’s most prominent annual gatherings, as guests in formal attire took cover before being safely evacuated.

Authorities say further details will emerge as the case proceeds in court.
