ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Tension has gripped Agatu Local Government Area following a deadly late-night attack by suspected armed herdsmen that left a traditional ruler, his wife, their son, and two others dead in Olegabulu community.

The Thursday night assault triggered panic across the area, with residents fleeing en masse amid fears of further attacks.

Sources said the attackers stormed the quiet border community between Agatu and Apa LGAs after youths in nearby areas resisted a previous assault.

A local political figure, who spoke anonymously, linked the killings to earlier violence in Atakpa.

“They attacked Atakpa weeks ago and were repelled. This time, they redirected their anger to innocent people in Olegabulu,” the source said.

He confirmed that five persons, including the monarch and members of his family, were killed, while several others sustained gunshot injuries.

The attack has forced widespread displacement, with entire communities reportedly deserted overnight.

“People were fleeing. By morning, many had left. Neighbouring villages are also emptying out,” the source added.

There are also fears that the attackers remain within the axis, allegedly hiding in nearby bushes between Agatu and Apa LGAs.

Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the incident, stating that security personnel had been deployed to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.

However, the Benue State Police Command said it was still awaiting full details of the attack.

Police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, noted that comprehensive information on the incident was yet to reach the command at the time of filing this report.

The latest killings add to rising concerns over recurring attacks in parts of Benue State, particularly in agrarian communities frequently hit by suspected herdsmen.

For residents of Olegabulu and surrounding areas, the immediate reality is fear, displacement, and uncertainty over when it will be safe to return home.
