LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigeria’s army leadership has unveiled a newly upgraded health facility in Imo State, marking a step toward better healthcare access while strengthening ties between the military and civilian communities.

On Wednesday April 22, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, inaugurated the remodeled health centre in Enugwu Okabia, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.

Highlighting the growing role of the Nigerian Army in community development beyond security operations, the project was facilitated by a senior officer at the National Defence College in Abuja and a native of the community, Maj.-Gen. Kelvin Ukandu.

Represented by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluremi Fadairo, Shaibu said the upgraded facility reflects ongoing efforts to promote peace and build stronger, more resilient communities. He praised Ukandu’s dedication, noting his more than 30 years of service to the country.

“This health centre will benefit the good people of Enugwu Okabia and further strengthen civil – military cooperation,” he said.

The Army Chief added that the project would greatly improve access to quality healthcare in the area.

He also pointed out that the Nigerian Army has completed more than 250 similar intervention projects across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Additionally, Shaibu expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support of the Army.

He also thanked the Imo State government under the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma, and local residents for their cooperation, urging them to keep sharing useful information with security agencies to help maintain peace and support development.

Meanwhile, Ukandu described the project as a personal commitment to rebuilding his community after years of insecurity.

He recalled that the area suffered major destruction over four years, with key infrastructure, including the health centre, damaged by criminal activities.

He further expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for restoring stability, which has allowed displaced residents to return.

He also recognized and thanked traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders for their efforts and contribution to completing the project.

Notably, Ukandu called for continued rebuilding of damaged facilities and encouraged stronger collaboration between residents and local authorities to sustain progress.

In response, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Oliver Ochonma, expressed gratitude to the Army for what he described as a “beautiful gesture,” assuring that the community would protect and maintain the facility.

The event ultimately concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to military officers by the traditional ruler, symbolizing appreciation and renewed partnership focused on security, development, and improved healthcare access.
